Black rhinos are terrestrial species that were previously present in big areas of the continents such as Europe, Asia, and Africa. They were carved in cave paintings that depict that they share the earth with humans for a significantly long time. There are known to be found in Africa and Asia’s tropic jungles. They thrived during that time. However, these animals normally live in protected areas these days and live in great of poaching. They are big-body animals with bulky legs and one or two huge horns on their head. Some species of these rhinos may not have visible horns though. The eyes' senses are weak but they can smell and hear extraordinarily. Some species of black rhinos have increased because of the proper implementation of measures decided. Leader-Williams, N., Milledge, S., Adcock, K., Brooks, M., Conway, A., Knight, M., ... & Teferi, T. (2005). |
When an individual or organization decides to conserve the population of black rhinos. One major threat can be a lack of support and concern from the side of government regulators and other stakeholders. Moreover, the construction of protected areas and providing human care to save the rhinos may be a costly affair. |
Some organizations that lack of support both in terms of legal rules and funds cannot take all appropriate measures to protect the rhinos and increase their population. |
|
Stop using rhino products |
Rhino poaching is common for using their skins and horns for making products such as medicines for illness treatment. Therefore, the use of rhino products should be stopped by creating awareness within and outside the organization. This will demand management actions such as using control measures for ensuring that every individual and communities stops using rhino products. Western, D. (1989). |
Certain communities such as the Chinese population who strongly believe in making and using medicines made from rhino horns may oppose the idea of not using rhino products. |
The proper actions to ensure individuals stop using rhino products will reduce the poaching of rhinos. Thus, there will be an increase in the overall number of black rhinos. |
|
Encourage people to use natural products such as sustainable wood, paper, and palm |
Individuals within organizations and communities outside should be informed in detail about the danger of extinction of black rhinos because of their hunting for making products. They should be made aware of alternative and more sustainable products that can be used in place. This will require management actions such as proper planning and directing on how to promote the use of natural products. |
Some communities and individuals may not be willing to adopt natural products. People who benefit from the poaching of rhinos will oppose this. |
The use of sustainable products such as wood, paper, and palm will change the consumption habits of people. They will not be supporting the hunting and killing of black rhinos in any way. |
|
Work with communities to motivate them to use natural resources |
It should be considered that the demand for rhino horns is high despite the ban on international trade for rhinos. Thus, there will be a need for a proper protocol to ensure that the communities of retailers and consumers are encouraged to purchase and consume natural resources instead of rhino products. For instance, the profits and revenue from the sale of natural resources will outweigh the outcomes from the sale of rhino products. Thus, the management can take actions such as conducting webinars to increase awareness. Lindeque, M. |
The threats associated with this action can be the lack of ability of consumers and retailers to see the bigger picture. They may have short-term visions and motives. Moreover, there will be cultural and traditional barriers in the way to motivating communities to use natural resources. |
If the organization is able to successfully encourage communities to use natural resources that are in abundance, it can protect the habitat and population of the endangered rhino. However, there is an uncertainty that the communities will oppose the idea of quitting the use of rhino products. |
|
Establishing insurance population: 1. Adopt a Black rhino/rhinos 2. Create protected areas for rhino and increase security in them |
The adoption of rhinos on an individual level will not be easy. The organization can consider adopting a few or some rhinos and members can be made responsible for providing them human care and helping them breed. While creating protected areas for rhinos, proper security measures should be taken. The management actions such as having proper data of care providers and installation of CCTV cameras help protect the rhinos. The adoption of rhinos and the creation of protected areas can also be two alternative actions that can be taken by the management to protect the rhino population. Borner, M. (1981). |
The threats and uncertainties will include non-implementation of security measures and staff’s involvement with poaching gangs. |
If no proper security, measures are taken by the organization regarding the prevention of poaching practices, there will be a decrease in the number of rhinos in the protected areas. Moreover, the growth and breeding of the rhino population are more likely to take place when they are residing in their natural habitats. Thus, the efforts in this direction may not necessarily bring some results. |
|
In-situ conservation actions: 1. Investigate poaching and illegal trade of rhino 2. Taking legal actions against authority and individuals indulge in poaching of black rhinos in any manner |
In-situ conservation actions will include efforts to be made by the organization to protect the black rhinos in their natural habitat. It will include management actions such as conducting regular investigations to ensure there is no international trade of rhinos in that region. Moreover, it should also be ensured that there no other threats that affect the population growth of rhinos such as leopards or lions attacking rhinos. Maggs, K. A. R., & Greeff, J. D. V. (1994, September). |
There will be a threat of not being able properly to investigate and secure rhinos because of bribery and corruption. There will be a risk that the natural habitat of other animals such as lions and leopards will get affected because of such actions. |
The proper investigation and punishment of parties involved in poaching practices will help to reduce such activities. |
