Background of Integrated Learning

UCAT (Universal Clinical Aptitude Test) is a five subject exam that is inclusive of verbal reasoning, decision making, quantitative reasoning, abstract reasoning, and situational judgement as to its key components (UCAT exam website, 2019). The purpose of this exam is to assess the general information and knowledge aptitude of the students that will be working in medicine and healthcare sectors. This exam is a revised update of the UMAT (Undergraduate Medicine and health science Admission Test) and has been active only since the year 2019 (UCAT exam website, 2019). This exam is critical as it assesses the critical thinking and reasoning of an individual that is crucial in healthcare and medicine. In this paper, I will reflect on my experience of UCAT examination practice. I will also discuss how I developed my skills to qualify and score in the exam.

UCAT Exam Experience

As browsed through the syllabus and the learnings required for UCAT exam clearance I prepared myself and read rigorously in the subject specific manner. I practised the questions on the official website of the UCAT exam that helped me assess the difficulty level and my initial aptitude for the test. The mock test on the website was available in the category specific manner that helped me immensely to understand my strengths and weaknesses as an applicant.

I identified that I had to focus more on quantitative reasoning and situational judgement and worked in direction for improvement of the same. To overcome my lacunae, I used Medify that helped me improve and the result was visible through my mock exam scores. Now, as I reflect on my learning and practice, I can deduce that the use of Medify helped me understand the application of abstract and quantitative reasoning and situational judgment. This assisted me in gaining a high score in these sections.

Learning About Self

One of the primary concerns with me, when I began my preparation, was time management. I learned that through diligence and effective time management I could improve my attempts and accuracy rate in the exam. Effective time management also helped me in focusing on questions more clearly and prevented the end time rush helping me achieve a decent score for selection.

Development of Chosen Capability

The chosen capability in the exam for my selection was literacy. I focused on the UCAT mock exams to understand the concepts of literacy and to develop an ability to read and understand the question requirements faster. With time, my reading speed improved significantly from 240 words per minute to 310 words per minute. I also focused on improvement in my literacy by reading text books and other reading material. This helped me understand the importance of reading in terms of being able to critically analyse the text and to imply its meaning into action. However, a major contribution to the improvement of the chosen capability was on the UCAT examination reading material and online practice exams.
