Self-care is important in the management of any chronic disease like diabetes mellitus (Jannoo et al., 2017). Since the patient is suffering from type I diabetes mellitus it is seen in the younger age group as it is insulin-dependent and the management is by insulin administration. The patient is from a different cultural background and the patient education should be such that it is per the culture he or she belongs to (Hemberg & Vilander, 2017). This is an important part of the healthcare planning which includes discharge planning in which the patient is to be educated on how to take care of them after they leave the hospital. It is important that as healthcare professional the personal prejudice of the culture is not allowed to influence the education of the patient in terms of culture and the values, beliefs and preferences of the patient are taken into consideration (Holland, 2017).
There should be cultural identification of the patient, cultural reflection as in how it is different from the self, being objective about it and the discharge care plan such that it reflects cultural sensitivity and cultural safety (Farokhzadian et al., 2018). For understanding the process, there will be a session of role-playing wherein student A will take the role of patient and student B will be the nurse (Cogo et al., 2016). In this role-play, the nurse will aim to provide the information about the monitoring of blood glucose level and the information is such that it is sensitive to the cultural background. If there is something which a person cannot do as self-management alternate should be suggested and it should be a reflection of evidence-based practice.
