Role of Servant Leadership in Nursing

Servant leadership was initially described as the leaders who achieve and attain results for the organizations they work in by looking after the needs of the people they serve (Farrington & Lillah, 2018). A servant leader in nursing continuously looks out for the needs of his/her staff and helps them solve their problems and helps in the promotion of their personal development. It is a leadership based on a caring attitude of the leader towards the employees and staff which helps in building trust in them towards the leader and the organization (Dameron, 2016). It leads to higher levels of employee engagements and improved staff retention.

It is unique in its humanitarian approach and attributes where they affirm their intention of being effective leaders and have competencies like stewardship, empowerment, ability to build relationships and have a vision for the future (Best, 2020). Servant leader characteristics are seen in nursing leaders where they determine the requirements of their staff and ask continuously how they can support the team for resolving their problems and promoting personal growth.

This type of leadership has a more service oriented approach where the leader takes a journey towards stewardship instead of a more authoritarian approach (Best, 2020). The ultimate role of a nurse leader is to make sure their staff is as efficient and productive as possible. The value-based expectations that have come about as a result of the healthcare reforms is that some leaders in healthcare are not considered caring or empathetic (Sherman, 2019). There are complains of lack of advocacy from leaders who are more concentrated on measuring performances and costs instead of care. The approach of servant leadership in nursing can help solve the problem by describing and emphasizing on the importance of every individual in the organization and help out in staff dissatisfaction, disengagement, turnover and their burnout as well.
