Introduction to Common Good Shared Responsibilities

It becomes highly essential to the healthcare facilities and workers to focus on the principle of the common good. In current times, Covid-19 global pandemic has raised a demand for common good in the healthcare sector (Zhou, ‎Wang & Hu, 2020). Several infections related to lungs and respiratory system is prevalent due to the spread of the Covid-19 virus.

This assessment is based on the common good practices, which are related to bronchitis and emphysema in the time of Covid-19 global pandemic. The assessment explores the situations in hospitals and care homes where shared responsibilities for the common good are not being realised along with proposing ways to address the identified responsibilities.

Challenges in Addressing the Shared Responsibilities of Common Good

A covid-19 global pandemic has significant effects on the psyche of the people throughout the world. On one side, it has developed a sense of dignity and respect towards the medical and healthcare professionals (Kaleab, 2020). It is because doctors and nurses are addressing the people affected with Covid-19 infection and are helping them to recover from the condition. At the same time, doctors and nurses are not able to acquire a proper accommodation in societies due to the intense fear among people. In most of the societies and communities, people fear the healthcare professionals to be the carrier of the virus due to which they may also acquire infection. For this reason, it has become a challenge to the healthcare professionals to seek proper accommodation in localities.

Also, it is found in many cases and studies that nurses and other healthcare professionals are not able to address the patients having a mild infection of Covid-19 effectively. Patients, who have chronic bronchitis and emphysema, are also sometimes considered to be Covid-19 positive due to which they are treated in different ways (Qu, Cao & Chen, 2020). These scenarios affect several principles of shared responsibilities of the common good. Healthcare professionals ask every patient in their OPD (Outdoor Patient Department) to present the negative report of Covid-19 infection to acquire regular treatment. Not only this but, in-home services offered to patients with severe bronchitis and emphysema are also not properly delivered (Callahan, 2018). Hence, it can be analysed that principles of common goods and shared responsibilities are not being adequately followed and addressed in the healthcare sector due to the hysteria caused by Covid-19 global pandemic. Various principles, such as respect and dignity, are seen compromised due to which patients, as well as the healthcare professionals, are facing significant challenges in acquiring treatment and accommodation, respectively.

Ways to Address the Challenges of Shared Responsibilities and Common Good

Many considerations can be made in localities, communities throughout the world to address the identified challenges about common good practices and shared responsibilities. These measures are presented in the following way.

  • Enhancement in the level of awareness is one of the astounding ways to address the identified challenges. Many of the healthcare professionals do not offer in-home services due to the hysteria of Covid-19 infection (Rodriguez-Morales, 2013). These professionals can be educated about their shared responsibilities in which they could be described that their contribution in addressing the health inequalities in societies is valuable. Along with this, awareness to consider safety measure while delivering community services can be enhanced (Aku, 2012). In this manner, the use of good quality masks, PPE kits and hand sanitizers can be promoted among the healthcare professionals as they can be the primary vector of the Covid-19 virus.
  • Various scientific studies indicate that Covid-19 infection spreads through the micro droplets, and it is considered airborne. For this reason, healthcare professionals such as doctors, nurses and ward boys are required to be provided with the education of significance of wearing protective masks (Hammaker & Knadig, 2016). These practices can be considered as shared responsibilities in common goods. Wearing of masks will not only prevent the healthcare workers addressing the patients of bronchitis and emphysema from getting the infection. At the same time, it will also contribute to reducing the spread of the infection (Callahan, 2018). Therefore, nurses and other healthcare professionals can be educated about the protocols to wear masks properly and safely discard them for the common good.
  • Healthcare workers are the entities in which current times of the global pandemic, who are fighting against the Covid-19 infection. Therefore, campaigns to enhance the awareness level in societies and gather support from the community representatives can also be established (Zhou, ‎Wang & Hu, 2020). In these campaigns, people can be motivated to support the healthcare workers who are capable of doing so. At the same time, it is also important to educate people about the consequences of ill-treatment of healthcare workers on community health.
  • Bronchitis and Emphysema conditions, which are considered under COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder), may also become prevalent due to the infection of Covid-19 (Kaleab, 2020). It is because these conditions also affect the respiratory functions of the human body, which is similar to that of Covid-19 infection. For this reason, patients in OPD of the healthcare homes and hospitals are required to be instructed to undergo mandatory tests for detecting their Covid-19 infection status. It can be analysed that these practices may ensure the fulfilment of the shared responsibilities for the common good (Aku, 2012).

Hence, there are several ways through which prominent challenges pertaining to shared responsibilities in Covid-19 global pandemic times can be addressed.

Conclusion on Common Good Shared Responsibilities

It can be concluded from the assignment that challenges such as unsafe protocols due to less use of masks, social hysteria and many others. It is found that healthcare professionals in hospitals and care homes are facing challenges in giving adequate services to patients with bronchitis and emphysema. Along with this, Covid-19 global pandemic has also affected the quality of services and shared responsibilities. For this reason, several ways or measures can be considered to enhance the delivery of common good, which may include providing education in societies and communities, establishing campaigns for enhancing awareness to wear masks and many more.
