Aim and Objectives: Statistics for Social Research

The purpose of this research is to produce a better understanding alcohol related practices and various strategies that are in practice to reduce its harm. For the purpose of this study, 446 respondents opinion was taken into consideration. About 95% of the participants said that they tried alcohol while only 2.5% of the participants said that they never experienced alcohol. It is found that approximately 2.5% deaths occur globally each year due to harmful use of alcohol and also it accounts for 4% of deaths worldwide that attributes to alcohol use across the various developed and developing nations

Methodology: Statistics for Social Research

For continuous variables, summary statistics and histogram can be used to assess the variable distribution. While frequency distribution and bar chart or pie chart can be used for nominal variables. Independent sample t test was used to determine whether there exists any difference in the mean between the two groups. For qualitative variables, chi square test for independence was used to assess the association between two variables. For the purpose of this study, 446 respondents opinion was taken into consideration. Simple random sampling technique was used to generate the sample participants and each and every participants were given questionnaire. They were also given 25 minutes time to complete the questionnaire. All responses to the questionnaire are anonymous. The names of individual persons are not required in any of the responses and no data will be collected on the questionnaire that could identify the participant’s identity.

Procedure: Statistics for Social Research

Simple random sampling technique was used to generate the sample participants and each and every participants were given questionnaire. They were also given 25 minutes time to complete the questionnaire. All responses to the questionnaire are anonymous. The names of individual persons are not required in any of the responses and no data will be collected on the questionnaire that could identify the participant’s identity. Thus, the data collection is an example of primary data collection method. All the participants are given consent form which they have to fill and assurance were given that their personal data were highly confidential

Measures: Statistics for Social Research

The variables taken into consideration are

1. Have you ever tried alcohol?

2. How often do you have a drink containing alcohol?

3. How many drinks containing alcohol do you have on a typical day when you are drinking?

4. How often do you have six or more drinks on one occasion?

5. How do you find out where parties and other social events where people drink alcohol, are going to be held? - Talking to others

6. Are you enrolled full time or part time?

7. Are you an international student?

8. How important is it for you to participate in the following activities at university? – Athletics

9. Audit Score

Here, the audit score is the dependent variable while the other eight variables are independent variables. Here, we try to determine the factors that influence the audit score

Plan of Analysis: Statistics for Social Research

Here, the audit score is the dependent variable while the other eight variables are independent variables. Here, we try to determine the factors that influence the audit score

Independent sample t test were used to determine the relationship between audit scores and enrolled in full time or part time job

Chi square test for independence was used to determine the association between Talking to others and how often do you have a drink containing alcohol

Chi square test for independence was used to determine the association between Talking to others and how often do you have six or more drinks on one occasion

We use this chi square test to determine whether the participant’s main intention for drinking alcohol was to have a get to gather and have a conversation with his friends

The data cleaning procedure was performed by the researcher or the staff who are well trained in this process. Data cleaning is a process of identifying inconsistent records that deviate far away from the normal dataset value and therefore, these values or variables needs to be removed from the dataset before performing the statistical analysis. For example, let us consider the situation of questionnaire related to life satisfaction where the data related to quality of life is missing and replacing these missing values is not appropriate as it will relate to the exact quality of life of the participants included in the study. There is difference between data missed due to some cause or data missed intentionally, even though it doesn’t play a significant role, the difference in these two types of missing data was easily categorized by the statisticians. Analysis based on the missing data at random seems to be unbiased as it will not play a major role due to its small numbers of missing values when compared to the sample size of the original data set

Conclusion on Statistics for Social Research

The major limitation of this study is about the participant’s involvement. The participants who are involved in this study are highly dominated by the alcohol consumption participants. That is, this study findings cannot be considered for a general population, but, we can use for a population that are related to alcohol consumption. The other limitation of the study is the quality of research involved on the effects of use of alcohol with data taken on common clinical conditions which were seen in primary care practice and this may lead to risk contribution factors like lack of attention by medical staff
