Health Care Barriers, Racism, and Intersectionality in Australia

In the field of healthcare, intersectionality refers to the approach which recognizes that the health of an individual is shaped by a variety of multi-dimensional factors which include income, education, race, status, culture, ethnicity, age, class, ability, geographical location, sexual orientation, indignity and others (Romero, 2017). These factors are overlapping in nature and influence the perception and overall approach of a health professional to provide care to his/her patients (Fox, 2016).

However certain factors like racism or intersexuality have negligible impacts on health equity and equality in modern healthcare systems but still, there is some evidence which highlights the fact that even so, intersectionality limits the capacity and competence of healthcare providers for providing equal healthcare services to the patients (Bastos, Harnois & Paradies, 2018). If I am talking about my cultural location in this context, I have found that in many instances, where inherited biases within me have come across in my profession and impacted my overall competence to provide quality care to my patients. Being from a different culture, sometimes I find myself reluctant to communicate with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. I think my lack of exposure to certain minority and ethnic groups and being a privileged child have intertwined by competence to serve disadvantaged people with full efforts.
