Portfolio Task 1 – Leadership: The Amazon Way Case Study
Over the course of the twenty years since its founding by Jeff Bezos in 1994, Amazon has expanded to become a global leader in e-commerce and technology. Since its inception as an online bookstore, the company has expanded into a diverse conglomerate providing a wide range of goods and services (Akash desai, 2021, Bader Althafairi et al., 2019, and Dimitrakaki, 2022). At this time, the corporation is demonstrating exceptional performance across multiple sectors, such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and e-commerce. Amazon has established itself as a worldwide frontrunner in numerous sectors due to its renowned dedication to innovation and customer satisfaction (Luiro, 2018, www.totalassignment.com, n.d., and Rossman and Euchner, 2018). Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, has advocated for leadership principles that have contributed significantly to the company's continued success.
Bezos, who established Amazon and assumed the dual role of CEO and founder, is often described as possessing a "transformational" style of leadership. A crucial attribute in a leader is the capacity to inspire and motivate individuals under their guidance to attain higher levels of accomplishment (www.totalassignment.com, n.d., Roy and Charaborti, 2016, and Vrethager, 2017)). Leaders who possess the ability to initiate change do so with this particular ability. One could characterise Bezos's management style as characterised by an unwavering commitment to innovation and a significant emphasis on client satisfaction (Pereira and Mykletun, 2012, Bryar and Carr, 2021, and www.proquest.com, n.d.)).
Visionary leadership is exemplified in Bezos's organisation through his propensity to pursue innovative ideas while embracing calculated risks (Evans, Murphy and de Jong, 2014, Martínez-Sánchez et al., 2021, and Voluntary collective isolation as a best response to COVID-19 for indigenous populations? A case study and protocol from the Bolivian Amazon, 2020)). He played a pivotal role in the development and introduction of numerous innovative e-commerce and cloud computing products and services, including Amazon Prime, the Kindle, and Amazon Web Services (AWS) (Silbernagel-Krohne and Moser, n.d., Bittar Rodrigues and Prideaux, 2017, and Sherman et al., 2012)). Encouragement of employees to dream large and take risks, as well as the inculcation of an organization-wide passion for innovation and experimentation, are central to Bezos's management philosophy.
Jeff Bezos implements a governing philosophy known as intellectual modesty, which serves as the foundation for his leadership approach. He is well-regarded at Amazon for encouraging vigorous discourse and harbouring a constructive attitude towards criticism (www.politesi.polimi.it, n.d., Valdanha Neto and Jacobi, 2021, and Espinosa and Duque, 2018)). The author emphasises how the Amazonian culture promotes personal development through failure and acknowledges that errors are an unavoidable component of the creative process.
In contrast, Bezos's approach to leadership is distinguished by its emphasis on customer requirements. As an indication that clients are present, he will frequently have an unoccupied chair in front of him during meetings (Tongkachok et al., 2022, Manurung, 2012, and Schein, 2020)). This act symbolises his resolute dedication to delivering an exceptional experience to every customer. Bezos is a firm believer in doing projects that will, in the long term, be of service to Amazon's consumers, even if such ventures may not see any returns for a number of years.
Bezos' method of management is consistent with the paradigm of transformational leadership, which places an emphasis on assisting those around you in realising their full potential by providing them with the space, support, and encouragement they require to do so. He promotes an environment in which inquiries are encouraged and new ideas are welcomed, and he does this by setting an example. Having said that, this particular method of leadership is not perfect and has its detractors. Many individuals are concerned that his demanding attitude could result in an excessively stressful workplace, and the practises that Amazon employs in this area have been the subject of scrutiny.
Even if the transformative leadership of Jeff Bezos has been a significant factor in Amazon's success, the company's leadership style might still stand to benefit from adopting some of the ideas of servant leadership. The concept of servant leadership emphasises placing primary importance on the health and development of one's fellow team members (myinstantessay.com, n.d., Banu et al., 2023, and Gorgulu, 2020). It incentivizes managers to look out for the best interests of their employees and assist them in growing professionally while they are under their supervision.
Amazon's work environment, which is frequently cited as a source of dissatisfaction by employees, stands to benefit from the application of ideas of servant leadership. Amazon is able to cultivate a culture that values compassion, diversity, and teamwork because it shows its employees that it cares profoundly about them (Ardi et al., 2020, Banu et al., 2023, and Gorgulu, 2020). It is possible that increased output and creativity will result from this change if it is successful in making workers happier and more invested in their work.
The concept of servant leadership requires managers to pay special attention to their employees, respond to their needs, and foster the professional growth of their staff members. These rules have the potential to improve Amazon's existing culture by encouraging a more balanced approach that gives equal weight to Amazon's dedication to innovation and the well-being of its employees (Ardi et al., 2020, Banu et al., 2023, and Gorgulu, 2020). Amazon's dedication to innovation and the well-being of its employees is a priority for the company. This policy would help achieve the goal of making Amazon's working environment more environmentally responsible and friendly to employees, which is crucial to the company's long-term success.
Last but not least, the transformative leadership displayed by Jeff Bezos may be directly credited with Amazon's meteoric climb to prominence all over the world. However, there is an opportunity to incorporate aspects of servant leadership in order to find solutions to problems at work and to ensure that innovation and the well-being of employees receive equal priority. If Amazon were to adopt this alternative style of leadership, the company would be able to maintain its current level of success while also developing a work culture that is more inclusive and responsible to the environment.
Portfolio Task 2 – Personal Reflection
During the course of my academic programme, I actively participated in employability diagnostic tools and activities, which I will now examine in this reflective essay. A variety of evaluations, such as Emotional Intelligence, CMI, and VARK, were comprised of these instruments. My employability skills, leadership style, and learning preferences were to be better comprehended through participation in these activities. I intend to analyse each of these evaluations using Driscoll's model of reflection in order to analyse the knowledge gained, the significance of that knowledge, and its potential impact on my future endeavours.
What: The CMI assessment yielded significant insights regarding my aptitude for management and leadership. The divergence of my scores across various competency domains served to underscore both my aptitudes and areas requiring refinement.
So What: After conducting an analysis of my CMI results, it became evident that my areas of proficiency are self-management (15) and decision-making (3.8), in which I obtained high scores. Leading innovation and change and providing purpose and direction were, however, areas in which I received lower scores. This enlightened me to the fact that there is potential for my development with regard to articulating a coherent vision and spearheading innovation within an organisation or team.
Now What: In the future, I acknowledge the necessity to improve my leadership abilities in the domains in which I obtained lower scores. This entails proactively pursuing opportunities to enhance my abilities in guiding and establishing direction, as well as instigating innovation and change. Through additional coursework, mentorship, and assuming roles that require these particular skills, I intend to accomplish this.
What: With the assistance of the VARK assessment, I was able to determine my learning preferences. The results indicated that I possess a slight inclination towards kinesthetic learning, which translates to preferring practical exercises, hands-on activities, and real-life scenarios.
So, what: The revelation of my learning preference has illuminated the reasons behind my propensity for academic success in specific settings. It is unsurprising that I achieve higher grades in courses that integrate practical exercises and real-life illustrations. Being self-aware enables me to recognise the significance of choosing educational opportunities that are in accordance with my individual learning approach.
Now What: Equipped with this information, my intention is to actively pursue additional courses and activities that correspond to my kinesthetic learning style. By doing so, I will be able to maximise my educational prospects and enhance my learning experiences. Furthermore, I will investigate strategies to modify my learning approach in order to increase its adaptability when required.
What: Self-awareness, self-control, motivation, empathy, and relationship management were among the emotional intelligence components in which my scores were disclosed by the Emotional Intelligence assessment.
So, What: The comparatively high scores I obtained in self-management, motivation, and empathy served as indicators of my aptitude for emotional regulation and interpersonal connection. Nevertheless, my scores for self-awareness and relationship management were marginally below average, indicating potential domains in which I could enhance my emotional intelligence.
Now What: In pursuit of a higher emotional intelligence, my intention is to prioritise the augmentation of my abilities in self-awareness and relationship management. By engaging in self-reflection, practising mindfulness, and actively pursuing opportunities to develop my interpersonal skills, I can accomplish this. Enhanced leadership capabilities will be complemented by improved personal and professional relationships.
What: I was personally obligated to direct a group endeavour that demanded an equilibrium between leadership qualities and collaborative efforts. By employing Driscoll's model of reflection, I conducted an analysis of the circumstances surrounding my leadership of a team comprising individuals from various backgrounds.
So, What: This particular experience underscored the significance of leadership that takes into account the emotional intelligence and learning preferences of individuals. It became indisputable that leadership effectiveness and successful project completion required attending to the emotional requirements of team members and recognising the various learning styles present on the team.
Now What: Moving forward, I intend to implement the insights gained from this experience by emphasising the unique requirements and learning preferences of each member of the team. By doing so, I will be able to modify my leadership approach in order to optimise the team's capabilities and cultivate a workplace atmosphere that is both encouraging and fruitful.
In conclusion, the employability diagnostic instruments and exercises furnished me with significant knowledge pertaining to my learning inclinations, leadership methodology, and emotional intelligence. Through the application of Driscoll's model of reflection, I have successfully discerned areas that require refinement and delineated practical measures to augment my emotional intelligence, learning experiences, and aptitude for leadership. Engaging in this reflective process has played a pivotal role in shaping both my personal and professional growth, equipping me with the fortitude and prospects that await me on my academic and vocational trajectory.
