‘Connected, but alone?’ and ‘How a handful of tech companies control billions of minds’ are two different topics with two different authors. The moral and the concept is the same but the ways are different. Here, both are talking about technology. In this digital world, everyone depends on technology which can give good as well as bad results.
Sherry Turkle believes that the dependent relationship between technology and humans are very powerful, and even if we want we could never break it. It is so strange that a small device can control almost everything in us (“Sherrie Turkle’s TED Talk “Connected, but Alone?”-Summary-Mary’s Site”, 2020).
Tristan Harris said Technology, networking, and social media is a trap wherein people are already living. They are unaware that these brilliant and entertaining applications are eating people rapidly. These applications know our thoughts, they know everything about human personality their likes dislikes and they know how to trap them. However, it is a good thing as well, by knowing human thoughts technology gives us the solutions and answers to whatever question we are thinking (“UnivCongress I TEDtalk: “How a handful of tech companies control billions of minds every day””, 2020).
There are a number of reasons why technology is dangerous for society? And a number of reasons why technology is good for society? Everything has power as well as weakness, has durability as well as dominance it depends on what the one will choose (Latour, 1990).
In her recent book, “Alone Together: Why We Expect More From Technology and Less From Each Other”, she said that people avoid face to face conversation and replace it with text messages. Text messages where one can’t see the other person, what expression he has while saying something, what he is feeling. It is a diplomatic world wherein we are able to hide and can control our feelings. When there is a conversation taking place in the front of the face, it will show the expression, everyone will be able to see whether it’s a crying face, a sad face, a happy face but while texting its ‘no expression conversation’ a type of a fake conversation. Only the gadget knows about the person, neither his partner nor his parents (“NPR Choice page”, 2020).
Tristan Harris explained the dangerous form of a technology called hijacking. Absence of the internet connection or the addiction of retweets and comments can actually make a person sick and he started feeling depressed. Additionally, there are many direct scams, one of it is Credit card fraud. A study by Ratnasingham (1998) has been shown that credit card fraud is the highest money fraud in the market. Behind the screen, anyone can manipulate but in front of the screen, everyone is in control and cannot cross the lines.
It’s a technological world where technology is a need, it doesn’t matter. Technology has brought many changes in people’s lives and harmed personal connectivity by many ways, by meeting people for various reasons has skipped due to technology, the time has passed now when people used to love meeting each other because of technology people prefers to stay in touch via social media. The amount of cases related to cybercrime has vastly increased and to commit such crimes are just become a system away, the use of technology for terrorist activities is the worst threat for society and the prevention of it has become a big challenge for police or defense personals. By doing work sitting on computers for long hours it has started developing stress, headache and other physical problems. Security of the data stolen or lost has become the most important concern for the firms as if it losses the data it may damage or spoil the company’s image and may invite legal hurdles for the firm. The use of technology or social mediums to distribute the society in various thoughts and by taking its disadvantage converting into riots is fairly wrong.
Both the authors have given their own explanation about how technology works and how it can control the world.
