Subject: Adoption of holistic care medicine such as Yoga and Acupuncture

Dear Editor,

In response to Susan Enfield’s article, “Why more western doctors are now prescribing yoga therapy?”, I wish to say that I agree with her argument and reasoning. As the hospital charges and insurance premiums are becoming increasingly unaffordable, more and more people and doctors are turning towards the use of alternative or traditional medicine options like yoga or acupuncture as a part of their holistic care and medicine. This switch to holistic care medicine is attributed to a number of factors like reduction in the side effects, increasing affordability, the ability of the holistic care practices to be able to treat diseases that are otherwise difficult to treat when approached with the use of modern medicine and improved health outcomes as well. Increasing research in the field of yoga and acupuncture and how it is increasingly beneficial, more and more doctors and practitioners are adopting the use of both, in providing holistic care to the patient.

As the costs of modern health care is increasing day by day and the insurance premiums and hospitals become increasingly unaffordable, turning towards holistic care is turning out to be a safer, affordable and effective option-yoga being one of the best available choices. Holistic care approaches are also being used as both, a lifestyle management option and as a methodology to improve physical, mental and social health for the individuals as well. Marked effects have been seen of yoga therapy on mental health in terms of having a positive impact in veterans who experienced trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury as well. Hence, it has been adopted by veterans in the USA, as a part of their holistic care plans as well (Walker et al., 2016).

Further research in testing the efficacy and importance of yoga and acupuncture shows a direct positive relationship between the use of holistic therapy methods like acupuncture therapy and yoga with improved mental and physical health status as well. However, greater research is required to understand the safety, efficacy and efficiency of this care focusing on specific diseases as not much research is done for the same. Also, comparative research in terms of comparing the holistic care methods with the modern medicine techniques for particular diseases will add to the existing research and help in developing better policy implications for incorporating yoga as a part of integrated medicine approach. The number and type of stakeholders involved along with the frameworks required for the same need to be looked at as well (Wal et al., 2019). Sufficient evidence exists about incorporating the therapy in an integrated approach. However, greater research is needed to further the use of holistic care approaches as individual treatment modalities.

Event though, a paradigm shift is seen in the way holistic care medicine is being adopted by the doctors and patients alike, further shift is needed in the attitudes of both the practitioners and the patients in helping incorporate holistic care as an alternative to standard medicine therapy for specific diseases and conditions. As research in the field of yoga increases, more evidence base is being created to support the same. Also, it is required for the insurance companies as well to reimburse for holistic therapy sessions for yoga and acupuncture as well, like modern medicine.

A bright future is envisaged for holistic care in the coming times where yoga and acupuncture will be incorporated as specific treatment modalities as a part of a more holistic model of health approach instead of a limited illness model approach of treatment.
