Reflection of A Volunteer

I worked through Immanuel college working for soccer clubs and also volunteering for sleep out to know how it feels for homeless people. Volunteering for my winter sleep out and a lineman for the community soccer club has been an interesting experience of my life. A Community soccer club is a private and non-profit organization that creates opportunities for outdoor soccer. The entry procedure for this game is directly through the on-line registration process. The role of the linesman in the community soccer club is essential and supports the work of the referee in decision making depending on the criticality of the game. The journey of working as a winter sleep out organization has given me the chance to interact with the people including the children who live without shelter. Poverty and poor socio-economic background are the major factors that left many people without shelter (Kacane et al.,2019). During my volunteering, I came across various issues faced by homeless people and include income insecurity and basic need insecurity. Apart from these issues, healthcare insecurity was an important issue existing among the homeless community owing to reduced access to healthcare services. Working with other teammates while volunteering has improved my interpersonal and social networking skills which eventually supported me to effectively interact with the community (Klatezer et al.,2014). . This also enable me to communicate in a sympathetic way to different people which helped for fundraising to help the homeless people (Sousal & Costa,2014). . Teamwork skills help me to create collaborations, meetings, and conversations within the organization I become more responsible and accountable in my profession of working as a volunteer.

The role of being a volunteer has taught me the skill of being empathic and helped me to put myself on other feet to understand their situation, concerns, and perception from their view point. It introduced leadership abilities in my behavior and shaped me into an effective volunteer. The role of a linesman could be challenging when you are faced with inappropriate actions from parents or family of the players but I have learned to be sympathetic towards the parents or family who have little knowledge of the rules and regulations of soccer. This creates the biggest challenge of my role as linesman as I need to think critically and try not to be too decisive with my judgment of the coaches, umpires, or referees because some of them gave up their time for the players and they may just be learning the game. My capabilities as the linesman empower me with decision-making capabilities assisting the referee in enforcing the law of the game as I act as the second pair of eyes to the referee. The difference I was going to make was to allocate a date for parents to perhaps come together once at the start of the season to learn more about the rules and regulations of the game got a better understanding and avoid misconceptions regarding the decisions throughout the game. In conclusion, a positive culture of sports creates a thriving healthy club community which sets for a long time success.
