Purpose- The study was conducted in the University of Canberra, Australia in the student community to understand 3 personality traits from the Big 5 theory (Extroversion, Conscientiousness, agreeableness) and what led the students to procrastination in their behavior.
Methods- Use of principal component analysis using a varimax rotation was used to find the co-relations between the traits and procrastination. Participants were 565 students of the University of Canberra (42% male & 58% female). Convenience sampling was used to conduct the survey and the participant was asked to fill up the questionnaire.
Findings- The overall model was significant and indicated that together, the dimensions of personality traits in students explained 9% of the variance in procrastination (R = .30, R^2=.09, Adjusted R^2=.08, F(3, 561) = 18.23, p <.001). Zero-order correlation showed all three personality dimensions are related to lower procrastination and there are no issues with multicollinearity with the predictor variable and non-linearity. The findings showed that those students who had a high level of conscientiousness in their personality traits are less subjugated to procrastination.
Conclusion- The study was successful in determining the key factor of conscientiousness amongst students at the University Of Canberra was the major factor in procrastination.
The need for Big 5 personality traits theory in the current environment help to understand people’ behavior and relationship by knowing their psychology and internal traits they carry. The ranking of each trait determines the motivation of their behavior and the thought process (Goodnet, 2018). The theory is used in academics as well as a business environment to study the characteristics of individuals and unlock the motivation of each person's behavior and help in improving interaction (Aps, 2014). The traits include agreeableness, extroversion, openness to experience, conscientiousness and neuroticism. Every trait follows a particular level i.e high to low. Such as any individual can have high extroversion but low agreeableness. Hence this theory helps in the corporate world to judge people, especially during the hiring and appraisal process. The study here will deal with 3 personality traits- independent variables ( Extroversion, agreeableness, and conscientiousness) and how it affects the Procrastination (dependent variable)of the student at the University of Canberra.
Although there are many types of research done on the Big 5 personality Traits, very few have focussed on the traits with the student psychology of submitting the assignment at the University of Canberra. Here we must understand the need for a literature review for previous work is necessary. According to Soto, (2018) each of the traits shows different life outcomes according to different stages of life. Here the traits are the independent variables and different stages of life as a dependent variable. The big 5 personality traits: The OCEAN model by Ackerman, (2020) deals with the psychology of individuals and how to leverage one's strengths and weaknesses. It deals with NEO and BFI personality trait theory.
According to Zaidi et al, (2012), there was a significant relationship between Big 5 personality traits and its effect on work management in government university teachers in Lahore, Pakistan. Extraversion, Conscientiousness, openness to experience and agreeableness has significant effects on work engagement. Even our personality traits have a relation with our food habits and the frequency with which we eat. As per Intiful et al, (2019) personality traits which one carries with them showed link to certain dietary habits in a study conducted across students in Ghana universities. Conscientiousness was associated with sugar moderation and variety, Extraversion was positively associated with food interest and neophagia whereas agreeableness was linked with neophagia and skipping of meals.
The study is conducted on the university student of Canberra where the 3 factors of Big 5 traits are brought into consideration with the dependent factor of procrastination.
I study the personality traits pro- factors impact on Procrastination and how conscientiousness, agreeableness, and extroversion individually impacted procrastination. The data were factorable, with a significant Bartlett’s test (x^2(136) = 2721, p < .001), as well as several correlations above .30, which the scatterplots demonstrated were best explained by linear relationships between variables. The findings clearly showed that students with who were more conscientious they were less procrastinate by nature. They were responsible and accountable for the task they were required to complete in a stipulated timeframe. Such students were sensitive about the needs of education for a better future. Other remaining factors were of not much importance as the value of R was quite low.
