Recently, the ABC News reported that "Australian Privacy Watchdog is bringing an action over Cambridge Analytica access against Facebook." The news was published on 9 March 2020 (Snap and Bogle, 2020).Australia prosecuted Facebook for breach of privacy. The Australia Information Commissioner (OAIC) grumbled that Facebook sold personal data of approximately 311,127 users from Australia without permission. The OAIC also argued that more than 86 million users are affected globally. The information was gathered by a third-party application named 'This Is Your Digital Life' (Cadwalladr and Graham, 2018). The person speaking of Facebook said they tried to limit the availability of information for app developers, but couldn't protect it. This sort of action is a violation of privacy laws (Kokolakis, 2017). The United Kingdom Data Protection Watchdog and the Federal Trade Commission previously punished Facebook twice for spoofing.Poe (2019) said that using personal data without permission is seen as a human rights violation.

Ethical Responsibility Towards Community

Ethical responsibility includes the conduct of the company, which the company expects but is not codified in law (Cho, Furey and Mohr, 2017). Ethical responsibility comprises:

Determination of Social Responsibility: A key element of ethically responsible business is to find ways of minimizing negative social impacts throughout your operations' whole supply chain (Schembera, 2018).

Environmental responsibility commitments: Ethical responsibility also means environmental protection, both domestically and internationally. Set your greenhouse gas energy consumption reduction objectives, minimize the use of toxic chemicals wherever possible.

Responsibility for the working environment: Workers should be protected against occupational risks, dignity, and promotion opportunities should be afforded, and living wages should also be paid in time.

Corporate responsibilities: As per the view of Cho, Furey and Mohr (2017), a company should handle employee behavior, and social responsibility in a way that fits the law. A business owner creates a fair and equitable atmosphere through the establishment of policies.

Accountability to Customer: The owner must look within the company at customer obligations. Some people consume the products or services sold by the company directly and others buy them in the market onshore. They are all subject to consumer rights which the company must fulfill to a reasonable degree.

Facebook promotes its business in social media through ethical obligation, which highlights the interests of the stakeholders. Corporations affect interested parties and vice versa. As one of the world's leading social media companies, it has billions of online users as stakeholders. These online users include people, organizations, and firms. In addressing stakeholder concerns, it will make sure that Facebook has sufficient legal obligations as well as policies.

Ethical responsibilities towards users: It has billions of users. They play a massive ethical role in determining the popularity and desirability of the promotional service of the corporation. For example, advertising companies are much more likely than others to pay for services such as online social networking. According to Kokolakis (2017), the company aims to constantly expand its user base as well as maintaining the privacy of personal information of the users.

Ethical responsibilities towards advertisers:Advertisers are Facebook's main source of revenue. This group is thus important as it influences the financial status of the company directly. These stakeholders' ethical responsibilities include efficient publicity services as well as realistic information from the organization.

Ethical responsibilities of employees:Facebook honors its staff for their contributions to the social media business.As pointed by Schembera (2018), these protagonists are important in influencing the advancement of the corporation. High compensation and career development are the ethical responsibilities of employees.

Ethical responsibilities towards governments:Governments are important since they enforce social media business requirements. This influence ensures that the business cooperates with public policies and interests, including regulatory compliance. The ethical responsibility to the government must be consistent with all government laws and regulations.

Ethical responsibilities towards Communities: In respect to the view of Orzes et al. (2018), these stakeholders greatly influence the company by affecting the values of consumers and marketers. Communities continue to encourage the growth of the business. Facebook has launched Internet.org to boost open internet access in developed countries.

The leading social media service Facebook has corporate social responsibility strategies and services that meet customers' needs. For instance, advertisers, staff, and governments are pleased with their agendas. The CSR strategy of the corporation, however, abandoned to support community interests as stakeholders adequately (Choi and Land, 2016). In order to resolve community issues, Facebook is recommended to increase corporate social responsibility through biodiversity and ecological community growth initiatives. In fact, the organization is advised to have tighter privacy and security guidelines for proper enforcement (Tuttle, 2018).

UN Global Compacts

The UN Global Compact is a policy project, according to Orzes et al. (2018), which facilitates internationally transparent undertakings. It is based on ten concepts outlining a company's belief structure and approach to business. Such principles have been unanimously laid down under the UN Universal Declaration on Human Rights, the UN Convention on Exploitation, and the Resolution of the Basic Values and Working Rights of the International Labour Union, the Rio Resolution on Climate and Development. Member companies are supposed to engage with the integrity of their profitability in specific business practices that benefit people and the world. The principles should be followed by member companies of the United Nations.UN Global Compact's ten principles for businesses are:




Human rights


Enterprises should respect and support globally affirmed human rights security.


Businesses must be careful not to be complicit in abuses of human rights.



The free expression and effective acknowledgment of the right to collective bargaining should be maintained by companies.


Firms must remove all types of forced and obligatory work


Companies should act to essentially abolish child labor.


Enterprises should reduce discrimination in the workplace.




Businesses should promote an environmental preemptive strategy.


Businesses should take actions to facilitate increased environmental responsibility.


The development and dissemination of eco-friendly technologies should be encouraged by businesses.



Corporations should work in all forms to tackle corruption, including bribery and extortion.

Privacy is now one of the most important contemporary human rights issues. The right to privacy means the phenomenon of the protection of personal data from being public. Tolley (2019) stated that one has the right to privacy as a human being. He is entitled to control of attention to the use of his name. In 1948, UN Declaration of Human Rights, which established the protection of privacy as a human right, had been amended. Article 12 stipulates unfair interference with the privacy, family; home, or correspondence of each person shall not be subject to. All are entitled to safeguard the privacy from such interference or assault. Unauthorized use of information is regarded as an intrusion of privacy (Hoek, Kane and Cracken, 2016). Violation of personal data privacy is therefore considered to constitute a violation of human rights. This means that the initial principle of the UN Global Compact that is related to human rights protection is being violated by Facebook.


Probable solutions to improve future business practices globally for Facebook:

  • The sharing of religious and political inclinations with advertisers and third parties should be stopped immediately by Facebook. This will hinder the targeting of people more resistant to false news and propaganda for malicious advertisers.
  • Facebook should limit the exchange of information without a review process like user name, profile image, friends, networks, etc. For most apps, such information is futile. Moreover, Facebook should also be willing to review and approve such apps, and the companies behind them straightforwardly and strictly.

These actions would signal that Facebook treat privacy issue as a serious concern and the misuse of data may have legal consequences.
